Dr. Jayant Sathaye was Senior Scientist and Strategic Advisor and Founder of the International Energy Studies Group at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory where he had worked since 1974. He was an Adjunct Professor at the University of San Francisco and Stanford University and is currently a Visiting Professor at University of California, Berkeley. Dr. Sathaye holds a PhD degree from University of California, Irvine and a B.Tech. (Hons.) Mechanical Engineering degree from IIT Bombay.
Jayant has extensive national experience in international activities related to about 50 countries. Major countries included China, South Korea, Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Australia, South Africa, Tanzania, Kenya, Congo, Liberia, Ethiopia, United States, Canada, Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama, Brazil, Chile, Argentina, Peru, Guyana, UK, Germany, Norway, France, Spain, Sweden, Denmark, Netherlands, Austria, etc. The work had focused on research, modeling and policy analysis of climate change mitigation, energy efficiency standards, building energy use (including cool roofs), power sector analysis, and forestry activities. He has published more than two hundred and thirty articles, books and book chapters and reports in major energy, environment and journals. Currently, it is ranked by Research Gate (RG) at 36.33, which is higher than 95% of RG members.
He has set up many activities related to India since 1986. These included testing of energy use in five cities in India along with four neighboring countries. He initiated activities related to setting up DSM programs in Maharashtra and Delhi regulatory commissions. These are now expanded to at least 12 cities. Other activities include the work for climate change, renewable energy options, forestry and work in rural areas, industrial activities, and transportation.
He has been a Coordinating Lead author of eleven publications of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) since 1990 and is a recipient of the 2007 IPCC Nobel Peace Prize. He also received a Distinguished Alumnus Award from IIT Bombay in 2011.
