Workshop on  Climate & Clean Air Coalition to Reduce Short Lived Climate Pollutants in Panvel City Pune, Feb 2016 : Summary As TERRE Policy Centre joined hand with CCAC (Climate and Clean Air Coalition) for the Municipal solid waste assessment initiative of Panvel city. So TERRE Policy Centre organizes workshop on Climate & Clean Air Coalition to Reduce Short Lived Climate Pollutants which was carried out at Panvel City on 17th of February 2016 from 11:00 am to 02:00 pm at Dr. Ambedkar Bhawan, Panvel in collaboration with Panvel Municipal Council and invited representatives from relevant institutions to brief on the project idea and methodology of the city assessment and draft action plan. This workshop is one activity of the Municipal solid waste assessment of Panvel City.

The workshop was chaired by Dr Vinitaa Apte (President, TERRE) and the Chief Guest of the workshop were Mr Khaade (CEO, Panvel), Mr. Girish Kandargaonkar (Vivam SWM Pvt Ltd., Pune) and Mr. Chintan Kantute (Sampoorn (E)arth ltd.’s).

Introduction

Workshop on  Climate & Clean Air Coalition to Reduce Short Lived Climate Pollutants in Panvel CityThe main objective of the workshop was to analyze & implement the assessment for the current scenario of solid waste in Panvel city. Dr. Vinitaa Apte, president of TERRE Policy Centre spoke about TERRE’s work in diverse fields of protection & conservation of the environment.

The workshop was started at 11:00 am by giving brief introduction of the project to City staff, Stakeholders, and other peoples. After the introduction TERRE theme song (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gH0X94m6lso ) showed to the participated people for the awareness towards environment. Mr. Khaade, CEO, Panvel city was the main guest of the event. Starting with the present condition of solid waste in Panvel city, one of the participants and stakeholder (Mr. Kadam ) revealed the unawareness among the people of Panvel city about segregation of the waste. He also discussed about problems and issues occurred during the solid waste management and how corporation/ council can overcome with it.

Followed by a talk by Mr. Girish Kandalgaokar, president of Vivam Solid Waste Management Pvt. Ltd. guide about the company’s prominent work on waste management in different societies, residential zones in Maharashtra. Also the information about self-developed equipment’s from waste to energy was given. During his talk he discussed important topics like energy generation from waste, use of biogas, biogas generation from wet waste and food waste, composting from kitchen waste and plastic can be used as fuel.

Mumbai based solid waste management Sampoorn (E)arth ltd.’s Mr. Chintan Kantute spoke the audience about the current scenario of Mumbai’s waste management. Involvement of the women in the sector & increase their employ ability was the main objective of the organization. He explained by giving example and case study of the process which is used for waste management in various city of India.

Ankit Gaurav, Project Leader – TERRE discussed what are the problems faced by stakeholders in municipal solid waste management which was earlier discussed during stakeholder meeting held on 19th January 2014 with stakeholders. He also gives a brief introduction of current waste management situation of panvel city and how the problems or issues can be solved.

Then in the presence of Chief Guest and by discussing with stakeholders, a detailed methodology and action plan is drafted for the assessment plan. A committee i.e. project coordinating team is established who helps during the assessment. The stakeholders were truly inspired by the workshop & positive towards the future planning of the assessment of the solid waste.
