Planning for Environmental Conservation: Dr. N. M. Joshi
A joint initiative by TERRE Policy Centre, BRICS World of Traditions (Moscow), and Snehvardhan Research Institute (Pune), the international interdisciplinary conference on topics like "Impacts of Urbanization," "Nature of Water and Air Pollution," and "Contributions of Prominent Personalities in Various Fields from Maharashtra" received a good response at both national and international levels.
The 27th International Interdisciplinary Conference, held on February 10, 2025, was successfully conducted. The conference began with the inaugural address by Dr. Vinita Apte, Founder and Director of TERRE Policy Centre. Following this, Dr. N. M. Joshi (Educational Expert) and Dr. Madhumati Koonjul (Former Head and Professor of the Department of Marathi Studies, Mauritius) launched the book My Friend Nature and the conference proceedings.
During the event, Dr. Madhumati Koonjul, the Chief Guest, shared important thoughts on urbanization and environmental issues. Dr. P. G. Kulkarni suggested measures for environmental improvements. Guest of honour Vishwadeep Koonjul (Former Officer at National Development Unit, Prime Minister's Office, Mauritius, and former member of the Village Committee) shed light on global environmental policies.
Dr. Snehal Tawre (Director of Snehvardhan Research Institute) emphasized the role of research and technology in environmental conservation. After the TERRE Policy Centre’s presentation, various experts shared their research. Sneha Karade managed the event’s proceedings.
The conference’s closing session, with presentations from various experts and researchers, encouraged participants to rethink urbanization and environmental issues from a new perspective. A large number of researchers, academicians, and environmental enthusiasts actively participated in the event.
During the inaugural ceremony, Dr. N. M. Joshi stated, "While urbanization progresses, we should not destroy the good aspects of the past. Now, the environment in all sectors is deteriorating. Therefore, planning for the next 50 years is essential. We must ensure that our steps are in the right direction. TERRE Policy Centre and Dr. Apte’s work in this regard is significant."
Dr. Vinita Apte remarked, "Small island nations are at risk due to climate change. This is a human-made crisis, which will lead to the destruction of biodiversity. We must fight to save it and create awareness. Urbanization is increasing, and we must ask whether there are limits to the growth of cities. Hence, sustainable development is necessary, and nature must be preserved."
Dr. Madhumati Koonjul provided insights into the environmental and Marathi language situation in Mauritius.
